{"id":33949,"date":"2014-11-22T02:06:07","date_gmt":"2014-11-21T15:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/problogger.com\/?p=33949"},"modified":"2019-08-21T12:39:12","modified_gmt":"2019-08-21T02:39:12","slug":"google-introducing-mobile-friendly-tags-in-search-results-and-signal-it-will-start-impacting-search-rankings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/problogger.com\/google-introducing-mobile-friendly-tags-in-search-results-and-signal-it-will-start-impacting-search-rankings\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Introducing &#8216;Mobile Friendly&#8217; Tags in Search Results and Signal It Will Start Impacting Search Rankings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last couple of years any blogger who has paid attention to their analytics will know that how people are reading blogs is changing. <\/p>\n<p>No longer are people simply arriving on your blog on their desktop computer or laptop but on tablets, mobile phones and more.<\/p>\n<p>Today I took a look at the change in how people arrive on my blog (<a href=\"https:\/\/digital-photography-school.com\/\">Digital Photography School<\/a>) over last 3 years. <\/p>\n<p>I doubt the results will surprise anyone.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"display:block; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/problogger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Screen-Shot-2014-11-20-at-1.41.31-pm.png?resize=600%2C392&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dPS Mobile Desktop Trafic\" title=\"Screen Shot 2014-11-20 at 1.41.31 pm.png\" border=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"392\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The growth in mobile\/tablet traffic has been remarkable.<\/p>\n<p>When I look at the last period in the chart in more detail and look at just this month (November) the trend continues<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"display:block; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/problogger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Screen-Shot-2014-11-20-at-1.45.31-pm.png?resize=600%2C393&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dPS Mobile Desktop Trafic 2\" title=\"Screen Shot 2014-11-20 at 1.45.31 pm.png\" border=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"393\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another month or two and we&#8217;ll be hitting a 50\/50 split of those on desktops and those on mobile devices. <\/p>\n<p>Every blogger I speak with tells me a similar story. While the breakdown might vary a little the day is coming (if it hasn&#8217;t already) where most bloggers will have more readers consuming content on mobile devices than desktop.<\/p>\n<h3>Google Launch Mobile Friendly Tags and Testing Tool<\/h3>\n<p>Google have been encouraging those with websites to make them mobile friendly for a year or more now but in the last week Google made an interesting announcement that is aimed at twisting the arm of those with sites even more.<\/p>\n<p>They <a href=\"http:\/\/googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com.au\/2014\/11\/helping-users-find-mobile-friendly-pages.html\">announced<\/a> that they&#8217;ll be rolling out &#8216;tags&#8217; in search results that mark sites as &#8216;mobile-friendly&#8217;. In the coming weeks when you search Google you&#8217;ll start seeing this next to those sites Googlebot considers to be fit for mobile consumption.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"display:block; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/problogger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Google-Mobile-Friendly-Tags.png?resize=600%2C240&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"NewImage\" title=\"Google Mobile Friendly Tags.png\" border=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"240\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What makes a mobile friendly site in Googlebot&#8217;s eyes? What it is looking for is sites that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash<\/li>\n<li>Uses text that is readable without zooming<\/li>\n<li>Sizes content to the screen so users don&#8217;t have to scroll horizontally or zoom<\/li>\n<li>Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Google also made available an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/webmasters\/tools\/mobile-friendly\/?utm_source=wmc-blog&#038;utm_medium=referral&#038;utm_campaign=mobile-friendly\">easy to use &#8216;test&#8217;<\/a> that enables us to add our URL and test if our blog fits the criteria.<\/p>\n<p>Simply plug in your URL and it&#8217;ll analyse your site and give you a tick of approval or a cross with suggestions on how to fix any problems <\/p>\n<h3>Google to Start using Mobile-Friendly Criteria in Ranking Sites<\/h3>\n<p>Also of interest in Google&#8217;s announcement this week is this line:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We are also experimenting with using the mobile-friendly criteria as a ranking signal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Take note<\/strong>: Google are officially letting us know that if your site isn&#8217;t mobile friendly that it could hurt how your site is ranked in Google. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: last year we completely redesigned <a href=\"https:\/\/digital-photography-school.com\/\">Digital Photography School<\/a> with a mobile friendly responsive design. <\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve also gradually been rolling out responsive designs on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.problogger.com\/\">ProBlogger.com<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/problogger.com\/events\/\">ProBloggerEvents.com<\/a> and in the coming month hope to finish overhauling the ProBlogger suite of sites by making ProBlogger.net and our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jobs.problogger.net\/\">Job boards<\/a> similarly design.
